Does magick exist? Absolutely! Magick surrounds us and resides within us, even if most people fail to recognize it. I can’t help but smile when someone claims, “I didn’t get here by magic.” That’s one of the biggest lies humans tell themselves. Here’s a universal truth: everyone performs magick—whether they call it that or not. Before you panic or dismiss this as blasphemy, let’s unpack this idea together.
What Is Magick?
First, let’s clarify the distinction between "magic" and "magick." Historically, the word "magick" was introduced by occultist Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa in *Three Books on Occult Philosophy.* Later, Aleister Crowley popularized it in *Magick in Theory and Practice,* defining it as “the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with will.” Crowley used the spelling to separate true magick from stage tricks and fantasy.
For the purposes of this discussion, magick isn’t confined to any specific spiritual or religious system. Instead, it’s a universal force accessible to anyone willing to explore it. By understanding magick, we can embrace the transformative power that shapes our lives.
Everyday Magick Unveiled
To recognize magick, let’s examine activities many of us engage in regularly:
· Prayer
· The Law of Attraction
· Meditation
· Positive Thinking
· Using Electricity
Each of these actions involves harnessing energy to create change, making them undeniable forms of magick in practice.
Prayer
Prayer derives from the Latin word *precari*, meaning “to beg.” It’s an act of communication with the divine, asking for intervention or expressing gratitude. Whether consciously acknowledged or not, believing in a higher power capable of manifesting desires is a magickal act. By praying, you focus your energy, will, and intention—the very essence of magick.
The Law of Attraction
The Law of Attraction operates on the principle that “like attracts like.” Our thoughts, emotions, and intentions emit energy that draws similar energy back to us. By focusing on positivity and goals, we invite opportunities into our lives. Of course, challenges will arise, but your mindset determines how you navigate them. The universe responds to both your focus and your actions, making the Law of Attraction a cornerstone of true magick.
Meditation
Meditation involves deliberate focus and mindfulness, creating shifts in consciousness. It’s a tool for relaxation, clarity, and connection, but it’s also deeply transformative. By entering a meditative state, you align your energy with your intentions, opening pathways to manifest your goals. This inner exploration is the same energy-shifting practice found in magickal rituals.
Positive Thinking
Positive thinking reshapes your perception by replacing negativity with optimism. It’s not just a mindset shift—it’s a transformative practice. By training your mind to focus on solutions and opportunities, you actively shape your reality. This process mirrors magick’s essence: using energy and intention to manifest desired outcomes.
Electricity
Once considered supernatural, electricity was viewed as magick until science explained it. The same can be said for fire, medicine, and countless other advancements. Technology, at its core, is magick revealed—proof that what we don’t understand often feels mystical until we uncover its mechanisms.
Perception and Reality
Your perception shapes your reality. Every second, your brain processes billions of stimuli through your senses, assigning meaning and influencing how you see the world. This meaning-making process determines what you believe is possible. In this way, perception is both the foundation of your reality and a key ingredient in magick.
Mindset
Mindset can be defined as a person’s set of core beliefs about the world, life, and oneself, and it influences how people think, feel, and behave in any situation. A fixed mindset believes abilities and qualities are static, leading to stagnation and fear of failure. On the other hand, a growth mindset fosters continuous learning and improvement, empowering individuals to adapt, overcome challenges, and realize their full potential. Both types of mindsets directly impact how we use magick in our lives. Growth mindsets align naturally with the principles of magick by emphasizing transformation and resilience.
Stage Magic
Stage magic is a performance art that uses sleight of hand, illusions, and misdirection to entertain audiences. It’s distinct from true magick, but its ability to captivate and inspire wonder taps into the same sense of mystery that fuels human creativity. While stage magic is grounded in entertainment, its artistry reminds us of the power of imagination—a vital element of real magick.
The Science of Magick
Real magick is the energy that transforms our world. Science is simply magick explained. Quantum physics reveals that everything vibrates, creating the illusion of solidity. When we perform magick—whether through prayer, meditation, or flipping a switch—we interact with these vibrations to shape our reality.
As Dorothy Morrison eloquently stated:
“Magick is not a practice. It is a living, breathing web of energy that, with our permission, can encase our every action.”
My personal definition of magick is the art and science of shifting vibrations and making the mental adjustments needed to achieve a goal. Like any discipline, magick requires the training and mindset to focus as we use various techniques to manifest those energy vibrations into the reality we desire. Is it easy? No. Like with the previous methods discussed, it takes time, research, effort, practice, and follow-through. It’s a synergy of wonder, curiosity, and creativity, combined with focus and discipline, to manifest the reality we desire.
Why Embrace Magick?
Magick isn’t just about rituals or spells. It’s about the wonder that drives human progress. Wonder fuels curiosity and creativity, the lifeblood of art, science, and innovation. As Albert Einstein wrote:
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”
Neil Gaiman also captured this sentiment:
“If you choose magick, you will never be able to return to the life you once lived. Your world may be more… exciting.”
What Will You Do With Magick?
Now that you recognize magick in your life, the question is: what will you do with it? Will you harness it to grow and expand, or will you ignore it, retreating into disbelief?
Talk to your Little Witch and see what excitement you can come up with. As for me, I was born on this path, and I’ll never leave it. Magick is too exhilarating, filled with wonder, growth, and excitement. What about you?
